The Ultimate Pool Opening Guide

Published: Spring 2026

Opening your pool correctly sets the stage for a trouble-free summer. While we always recommend professional service, here is a general overview of the process.

Step 1: Remove the Cover

Carefully pump off any standing water and remove debris from the winter cover before taking it off. Clean the cover thoroughly and let it dry before storing it to prevent mold.

Step 2: Reinstall Equipment

Reattach your ladders, diving boards, and handrails. Make sure to lubricate the bolts to prevent rusting.

Step 3: Remove Plugs & Reassemble Filter

Take out all the winterizing plugs from your skimmers and return jets. Reinstall your skimmer baskets and return jet fittings. Reassemble your pump, filter, and heater, ensuring all drain plugs are securely in place.

Step 4: Top Up the Water

Use your garden hose to bring the water level up to the middle of the skimmer opening.

Step 5: Start the System & Balance Chemistry

Prime the pump and turn the system on. Check for any leaks. Once the water is circulating, test the chemistry and shock the pool to kill any bacteria that grew over the winter.
