How to Test Pool Water: A Simple Guide for Toronto Homeowners

Proper water chemistry is the foundation of a healthy pool. Balanced water keeps swimmers comfortable, extends the life of your equipment, and prevents the algae and bacteria growth that leads to expensive problems. For Toronto and GTA homeowners managing their own pool chemistry, understanding how to test and what you are looking for makes the difference between a summer of clear water and a summer of chasing problems.

What You Need to Test

A complete water test covers six parameters. You do not need to test all of them every week, but each one matters:

  • Free chlorine (FC): The active sanitizer. Target: 1–3 ppm. Test weekly.
  • pH: How acidic or basic the water is. Target: 7.4–7.6. Test weekly.
  • Total alkalinity (TA): The pH buffer. Target: 80–120 ppm. Test every two weeks.
  • Calcium hardness (CH): Prevents surface damage and equipment wear. Target: 200–400 ppm. Test monthly.
  • Cyanuric acid (CYA) / stabilizer: Protects chlorine from UV breakdown. Target: 30–50 ppm. Test at opening and every 4–6 weeks.
  • Salt (for salt pools): Required by your generator. Target: 2,700–3,500 ppm. Test monthly.

Testing Methods: Test Strips vs Liquid Test Kits

Test strips are fast and convenient. Dip in water, hold horizontally for 15 seconds, and compare colours to the chart. They give you a reasonable reading for chlorine, pH, and alkalinity. Accuracy is moderate — good enough for weekly quick checks.

Liquid test kits are more accurate and give you better results for chlorine and pH. The DPD method (using OTO and phenol red reagents) is the standard. More involved than strips but worth using for monthly full tests.

Digital testers give accurate pH and ORP readings and are good for monitoring salt and temperature. More expensive but pay for themselves with accurate results.

Professional water testing: Your local pool store will test your water for free, usually covering all six parameters. Worth doing at opening, at mid-season, and at closing. CA Pool can also test your water during any service visit.

How Often to Test in Toronto Summers

GTA summers are hard on pool chemistry. High temperatures in July and August, heavy rainstorms that dilute and alter water balance, and intense UV exposure all require more frequent attention than in milder climates.

  • During June and September: Test chlorine and pH twice per week
  • During July and August: Test chlorine and pH three times per week
  • After any heavy rain: Test chlorine and pH within 24 hours
  • After heavy use (parties, etc.): Test chlorine and pH the following day
  • Full panel test: Once per month throughout the season

The Order of Chemical Adjustments

When you need to adjust multiple parameters, always follow this order to avoid having each adjustment interfere with the next:

  1. Total alkalinity first
  2. pH second
  3. Calcium hardness third
  4. Cyanuric acid fourth
  5. Chlorine last

This order matters because alkalinity affects how effectively pH adjustments work, and pH affects how efficiently chlorine performs.

When to Call a Professional

If you are testing consistently and your chemistry still will not stay in range — chlorine keeps dropping despite regular additions, or pH keeps rising faster than it should — there is usually an underlying issue. Common culprits include cyanuric acid that has built up too high (chlorine lock), phosphates feeding algae growth, or a salt cell that is no longer producing adequate chlorine output.
