A proper pool opening sets the tone for the entire season. Do it right and your water is balanced, your equipment is running smoothly, and you are swimming by the end of the first week. Rush it or skip steps and you spend the first month chasing chemistry problems or dealing with equipment issues that a proper inspection would have caught.
This checklist covers every step of a professional-grade pool opening for Toronto and GTA homeowners.
Before You Start
Check the forecast. Make sure overnight temperatures are reliably above 5°C for the next 10 days before starting. In Toronto, this typically means waiting until at least May 20. In Aurora and King City, wait until early June.
The 15-Step Pool Opening Checklist
- Remove standing water from the cover — Use a cover pump to remove water that has accumulated over winter. Trying to drag a heavy wet cover off the pool always results in dirty water going into the pool.
- Clean and remove the cover — Clean the cover with a mild solution before folding it. Store it dry to prevent mould and extend its life.
- Reinstall ladders, handrails, and accessories — Inspect each piece for rust, cracks, or loose fittings before reinstalling.
- Remove winter plugs — Remove plugs from all return inlets and skimmers. Keep them — you will need them again at closing.
- Reassemble the pump — Install the drain plugs you removed at closing. Replace the O-rings if they look cracked or worn.
- Reinstall the filter components — Replace drain plugs, pressure gauges, and any components removed for winter. Check the filter media for condition.
- Reconnect the heater and salt cell — Check all connections and inspect the salt cell for scale buildup that should be cleaned before startup.
- Refill the pool if needed — If you lowered the water level at closing, refill to the midpoint of the skimmer opening before starting the pump.
- Prime the pump and start the system — Prime the pump by filling the strainer basket with water. Start the system and check for leaks at all fittings immediately.
- Check all return jets and skimmer flow — Confirm flow from every return. A blocked return indicates a plug that was not removed or a line that did not clear.
- Inspect the filter pressure — Note the starting pressure. This is your baseline for knowing when the filter needs backwashing or cleaning during the season.
- Test the water chemistry — Test pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid (stabilizer), and chlorine. After winter, most pools need significant adjustment.
- Balance the water — Adjust alkalinity first, then pH, then calcium hardness. Balanced water is essential before shocking.
- Shock the pool — Add a startup dose of shock (typically 1 kg per 50,000 litres) to establish a chlorine base. Run the filter overnight.
- Retest after 24 hours — Retest chemistry the next day. Make final adjustments. Once chlorine is between 1 and 3 ppm and pH is between 7.4 and 7.6, the pool is ready to swim.
