Green Pool? Here Is How to Fix It Fast in Toronto

You go outside one morning and the water in your pool has turned green. It happens more often than you might think — especially in Toronto and GTA summers when heat and humidity combine with even a brief lapse in chlorine maintenance. The good news is that a green pool can almost always be recovered, and most pools are swim-ready again within 48 to 72 hours.

Why Pools Turn Green

Green water is caused by algae growth. Algae is always present in pool water at microscopic levels, but it only becomes visible — and turns your pool green — when conditions allow it to multiply rapidly. The main triggers are:

  • Low chlorine: If your free chlorine drops below 1 ppm, algae can begin multiplying within hours in warm summer water
  • High water temperature: Algae grows fastest between 25°C and 35°C, which covers most of Toronto's July and August
  • Poor circulation: Areas of the pool with low flow (dead spots) allow algae to take hold more easily
  • High phosphates: Leaves, grass, and debris decomposing in the water release phosphates that feed algae growth
  • pH out of range: When pH rises above 7.8, chlorine becomes significantly less effective at killing algae even at normal concentrations

Green Pool Recovery: Step by Step

Step 1 — Assess the Severity

Light green water where you can still see the bottom of the shallow end is early-stage algae. This can usually be cleared in one to two treatments. Dark green water where you cannot see below 30 cm is advanced algae and will require multiple treatments over two to four days. Black or brown water with visible slime indicates severe contamination and may take a full week of treatment.

Step 2 — Brush the Entire Pool

Before adding chemicals, brush all walls, steps, and the floor thoroughly. This breaks up algae colonies clinging to surfaces and exposes them to the chemicals you are about to add.

Step 3 — Shock Treatment

Shocking means adding a very high dose of chlorine to kill the algae rapidly. For green pool recovery, you typically need to bring free chlorine to 10–30 ppm, which is 5 to 10 times the normal level. This is called super-chlorination. Use calcium hypochlorite shock (granular) for the fastest results.

Step 4 — Add Algaecide

After shocking, add a quality algaecide to kill any algae that survives the initial shock. A phosphate remover at this stage also removes the food source that allowed algae to grow in the first place.

Step 5 — Run the Filter Continuously

Run your filter 24 hours a day during recovery. Dead algae must be physically removed from the water. Backwash or clean the filter every 12 hours during active treatment to prevent it from becoming blocked with dead algae and losing effectiveness.

Step 6 — Vacuum to Waste

Once the water begins to clear, you will see dead algae (grey or white cloudy sediment) settling on the floor. Vacuum this to waste rather than through your filter to avoid re-circulating the dead material. If you do not have a waste setting on your filter, vacuum very slowly and backwash frequently.

Step 7 — Retest and Balance

Once the water clears, retest all chemistry. Heavy chemical treatment often throws off pH and alkalinity. Bring everything back into range before swimming.

How Long Does It Take?

Light green: 24 to 48 hours. Moderate green: 48 to 72 hours. Dark green or worse: 4 to 7 days of daily treatment. These timelines assume you are running the filter continuously and treating aggressively.
